In the Garden
The gardening program provides opportunities to work, learn specialized skills, and engage with the natural world. Gardening activities include planting and seeding vegetables, annuals, and perennials in the greenhouse, maintaining a meditation path and woodland garden, caring for a butterfly garden, and tending the organic raised-bed gardens.
Eight to ten regular gardeners work as employees. These employed gardeners learn basic work and leadership skills and receive an hourly wage. Along with leading weekly operations, the gardeners host seasonal plant sales and occasionally attend special events or trainings.
The greenhouse workers grow a variety of plants from seeds and cuttings for the gardens and for sale year round: vegetables, herbs, unusual annual and perennial flowers, ground-covers, shrubs, and indoor plants. Organic herb vinegar, dried herbs, and pepper sauce are also available seasonally.
The grounds offer the community members and the neighborhood places of rest and reflection as well as expanses of lawn for play and flowers and fruits for harvesting.
We invite you to our upcoming plants sales at the Friendship Center, and to volunteer on a Tuesday or Thursday with our gardeners!
